When Linden sophomore Xavier McClain passed away on Wednesday from what seems to have been a brain injury received in a Big Central Conference game against Woodbridge on September 9, tragedy struck Union County for the second time in two weeks. Ali Muhamad, a senior at Rahway High School, passed on the day after his father discovered him dead in his bed while trying to get him up for school.
Derek Armstead, the mayor of Linden, made the announcement about Xavier’s passing late on Wednesday night on a number of his social media accounts. In an email sent to the whole district on Thursday morning, acting superintendent of schools Denise Cleary informed the Linden faculty and staff of the child’s passing. Together, we hoped for a different result and prayed for a miracle, Armstead wrote on his social media posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
“I have faith that God is wiser. He chose to invite Xavier home to be with Him since He needed an angel. I have known his parents, Lisa and Norm, for years, and their two sons, Xavier and Andres, since they were young boys, so this news hurts, said, Armstead. Tragically, their worst nightmare was realized.
