The official ceremony ended at eleven. The part people will remember started an hour later, in a room with about ninety people in it and a bar that was never designed for this many famous elbows.

The moment

By one in the morning the two co-stars whose reported falling-out had powered a year of speculation were photographed at the same corner table, laughing at something off-camera. The picture went up before either of their publicists had gone to bed.

What the guests said

"Everyone in that room clocked it at the same second," one attendee said. "There was a genuine pause. And then everyone very politely pretended not to look."

Representatives for both stars declined to comment, which in this business is its own kind of statement.
