Renewing a show before it premieres is rare. Renewing it three weeks before, on the strength of internal test screenings, is close to unheard of.

Insiders point to two things: an unusually strong response from test audiences under thirty-five, and a cast whose availability was about to get complicated. Locking a second season now meant locking the leads now.
